Updated

A speech bubble. Happy birthday to our favourite person in the group chat. Don't tell the others.

Another year of you. I could not have wished for better.

From Dev

Happy birthday, love. I am always in your corner.

From Ellen

You are the best thing we ever did. Happy birthday.

From Ben

Pick a design

  • A wrapped present. Happy birthday. It's a big one. Well, medium.
  • A big ice cream. It is bigger than your head. That is the point.
  • Celebrating. Look at you. Another year, still shining.
  • Half a biscuit over a mug of tea, the other half gone in, and the words one, two, three, four. Happy birthday. Try not to go soft.
  • Tasting the wine. We tasted six. We remember four. Happy birthday.
  • A sun. Happy birthday. Hope the sun comes out.
  • Two-colour printed lettering. Happy birthday. Yes, there's cake. No, you don't have to speak.
  • Marker lettering with a highlighter stroke. Happy birthday. Stay exactly as you are. Maybe tidier.
  • Lino-cut lettering in a printed band. Happy birthday. Tea's on me.
  • A party hat. Happy birthday. The hat is not optional.

The question

Each writer gets a question.

One at a time, about Sam. They answer in their own words, or write without one.

Who they are to you
  1. Something Sam did this year that you still think about.
  2. Words of Sam's that you have caught yourself using.
  3. A day Sam made better just by turning up.
  4. Something Sam taught you without meaning to.
  5. A small thing about Sam that nobody else would notice.
  6. The story about Sam you tell most.
  1. The moment you knew you had a proper friend in Sam.
  2. Something Sam did that only a friend would.
  3. A thing you still laugh about together.
  4. The time Sam turned up when it mattered.
  5. Something Sam knew about you before you said it.
  1. Something Sam did for the family that went unsaid.
  2. A habit of Sam's that you have caught yourself copying.
  3. A memory of Sam from when you were younger.
  4. Something Sam put up with from you.
  5. Something Sam taught you, mostly by example.
  1. A small thing Sam did that you noticed and never mentioned.
  2. The moment you knew.
  3. Something Sam did this year that made things easier for you.
  4. A thing about Sam you would not change.
  5. Something Sam carried that was yours to carry.
  1. The thing you go to Sam for.
  2. Something you picked up from working beside Sam.
  3. A bad day at work that Sam turned round.
  4. Something a new starter should be told about Sam.
  5. Something Sam did that made the job feel worth doing.

Or write without one.

Birthday wishes for your daughter

Pick who is writing, add one specific thing, and sign.

From mum

  • Happy birthday, darling. Watching you become yourself has been the joy of my life.

  • To my daughter: you handle more than you let on, and I see it. Happy birthday.

  • Happy birthday. I am proud of you every day, but today I get to say it in a card.

  • You were my baby and now you are my friend. Happy birthday, love.

  • Happy birthday, sweetheart. Ring me when you have had the cake.

  • Another year of you. I could not have wished for better.

From dad

  • Happy birthday. Your old dad is very proud of you.

  • To my daughter: you have good sense and a good heart. That covers most of life.

  • Happy birthday. I will keep the speech short and the hug long.

  • You grew up well. That is mostly your mother, but I helped a little.

  • Happy birthday, love. I am always in your corner.

  • Another year, another reason to brag about you at work.

From both parents

  • Happy birthday from both of us. We are prouder than we say.

  • To our daughter: this house is quieter without you and better with you. Come home soon.

  • Happy birthday, darling. Love from Mum and Dad, always.

  • You are the best thing we ever did. Happy birthday.

  • Happy birthday. Dinner is on us whenever you are free, which we hope is soon.

For a grown-up daughter

  • Happy birthday. The woman you have become is someone I admire.

  • To my grown-up daughter: your judgement is better than mine was at your age. Trust it.

  • Happy birthday. Seeing you run your own life well is my favourite thing.

  • You pay your bills, you keep your friends, you call your mother. Happy birthday.

  • Happy birthday to a daughter who needs no advice from me, which I will give anyway over lunch.

Funny

  • Happy birthday. You are now officially too old to blame the dog.

  • Another year, and you still cannot load a dishwasher. Happy birthday.

  • Happy birthday. We raised you well. The evidence is thin but we stand by it.

  • You are our favourite child. Do not tell your brother we keep saying that.

  • Happy birthday. Rent is still free, love is still unconditional, the fridge rules still apply.

Short

  • Happy birthday, darling girl.

  • Proud of you. Love you. Happy birthday.

  • Have a lovely day. All our love.

  • Happy birthday. You are so loved.

  • Another year of you. Wonderful.

What to leave out

Do not give advice she did not ask for. A birthday card is for saying well done on being her.

Do not write about how fast she grew up and leave it at that. Say what you like about who she is now.

Do not mention grandchildren, weddings or careers unless she raises them first. The card is not the place.

One card from home

Mum, dad, grandparents, siblings. One link, and it opens on her birthday.

  1. 01

    Add her birthday.

The card opens that morning and not before.

  2. 02

    Ask the family.

Each person gets one link and writes once, in a browser.

  3. 03

She reads it wherever she is.

Every message signed with a name. She keeps it.

Questions

What do parents write in a daughter's birthday card?

That they are proud, one thing she did this year, and love. The detail is what separates it from every other card.

How do you write a birthday card for a grown-up daughter?

Write to the adult, not the child. Say what you admire about her now.

Should a card from dad be different from mum's?

Only in voice. Say it your way, short if you are short. A few honest words from dad carry far.

What if my daughter is far away?

Say you miss her, say when you will see her, and send the card so it arrives on the day. A group card from home helps.

Somebody has a day coming up.
