A set of car keys. You passed. Mind the kerb.

The hat suits you. Keep the certificate somewhere you will actually find it.

From Rosa

Congratulations. Ring us when you are ready to celebrate.

From Sam

We always knew you would get there. Some of us just said it louder than others.

The question

Each writer gets a question.

One at a time, about Sam. They answer in their own words, or write without one.

Who they are to you
  1. Something you saw Sam do to get here.
  2. The moment you knew Sam would manage it.
  3. Something Sam put up with on the way.
  4. A thing about Sam that made this no surprise.
  5. The part of this that was all Sam's own doing.
  6. Something you hope Sam will stop and enjoy.
  1. The moment you knew you had a proper friend in Sam.
  2. Something Sam did that only a friend would.
  3. A thing you still laugh about together.
  4. The time Sam turned up when it mattered.
  5. Something Sam knew about you before you said it.
  1. Something Sam did for the family that went unsaid.
  2. A habit of Sam's that you have caught yourself copying.
  3. A memory of Sam from when you were younger.
  4. Something Sam put up with from you.
  5. Something Sam taught you, mostly by example.
  1. A small thing Sam did that you noticed and never mentioned.
  2. The moment you knew.
  3. Something Sam did this year that made things easier for you.
  4. A thing about Sam you would not change.
  5. Something Sam carried that was yours to carry.
  1. The thing you go to Sam for.
  2. Something you picked up from working beside Sam.
  3. A bad day at work that Sam turned round.
  4. Something a new starter should be told about Sam.
  5. Something Sam did that made the job feel worth doing.

Or write without one.

What people write

Pick a message, change a detail so it is true of them, and sign it.

From friends

  • Congratulations. Three years of group chats, deadlines, and bad coffee, and you pulled it off.

  • We always knew you would get there. Some of us just said it louder than others.

  • Qualified, employed, and no longer texting me about extensions. Congratulations.

  • The hat suits you. Keep the certificate somewhere you will actually find it.

From family

  • We are so proud of you. All those years of work, and here you are.

  • Congratulations from all of us. The degree is yours. The celebratory dinner is ours.

  • You did this yourself, and we watched every bit of it. Well done.

  • Congratulations. Ring us when you are ready to celebrate.

What to leave out

Do not write about what comes next, jobs, salaries, or moving out. The card is for finishing, not for starting something harder.

Do not list every subject they studied or every exam they sat. Something specific about them beats a summary of their course.

Avoid anything that sounds like a speech. They have already sat through one of those today.

One card from everyone

Friends, family, the people who fed them through finals. One link, and it opens on the day.

  1. 01

    Set the graduation date.

The card opens that morning. Nobody sees it before.

  2. 02

    Send one link.

Everyone signs from their phone or browser. No chasing, no paper round the room.

  3. 03

They open it on the day.

Each message signed by the person who wrote it. They keep it.

Questions

What makes this graduation card different from a shop card?

A shop card gets one message from one person. This graduation card collects a message from everyone who matters, each signed by name, and opens on the day.

Who signs a graduation card?

Anyone who was part of getting them there. Friends, family, the housemates, the people who proofread the dissertation at midnight.

Can I use this card for any kind of graduation?

Yes. The card works for a degree, a master's, a professional qualification, or a school leaver. Change the wording to fit what they actually did.

Somebody has a day coming up.
