The question

Each writer gets a question.

One at a time, about Sam. They answer in their own words, or write without one.

Who they are to you
  1. The thing Sam did, as you would tell it.
  2. What it changed for you.
  3. Something Sam did that they probably thought was small.
  4. The moment you realised what Sam had done.
  5. How Sam helped, and not only what they did.
  6. What would have happened without Sam.
  1. The moment you knew you had a proper friend in Sam.
  2. Something Sam did that only a friend would.
  3. A thing you still laugh about together.
  4. The time Sam turned up when it mattered.
  5. Something Sam knew about you before you said it.
  1. Something Sam did for the family that went unsaid.
  2. A habit of Sam's that you have caught yourself copying.
  3. A memory of Sam from when you were younger.
  4. Something Sam put up with from you.
  5. Something Sam taught you, mostly by example.
  1. A small thing Sam did that you noticed and never mentioned.
  2. The moment you knew.
  3. Something Sam did this year that made things easier for you.
  4. A thing about Sam you would not change.
  5. Something Sam carried that was yours to carry.
  1. The thing you go to Sam for.
  2. Something you picked up from working beside Sam.
  3. A bad day at work that Sam turned round.
  4. Something a new starter should be told about Sam.
  5. Something Sam did that made the job feel worth doing.

Or write without one.

Thank you teacher messages from parents

Pick one, put the real thing in it, and sign your name.

End of term

  • Thank you for this year. We saw how much they grew and we know who to thank for it.

  • They came home every Friday with something new. That was you, and we are grateful.

  • Thank you for a good year. The confidence they have now was not there in September.

  • What you did for them this year will stay with them. Thank you from all of us.

  • They loved this class. Thank you for making it worth loving.

A teacher who went further

  • You noticed when they were struggling before we did. Thank you for that.

  • Thank you for calling us when you did. It made all the difference.

  • You found the way in when we had run out of ideas. We are so grateful.

  • Thank you for the extra time you gave them. They knew you meant it and so do we.

  • You made them feel capable when they were not sure they were. That counts for everything.

A difficult year

  • It was not an easy year, and you stayed steady for them throughout. Thank you.

  • Thank you for your patience. There were hard days and you handled them better than we did.

  • They needed someone to believe in them this year. You were that person. Thank you.

  • We know this year asked a lot of you. Thank you for giving it anyway.

From a parent, short

  • Thank you for looking after them so well.

  • We are glad they had you this year.

  • Thank you. They talk about you at home all the time.

  • A brilliant year. Thank you for everything in it.

  • Thank you for being someone they trusted.

What not to write

Do not thank them for doing their job in general. Teachers read a lot of those. Say the one thing your child came home and told you about, or the moment you saw a change in them.

Do not mention anything about money, workload or how underpaid teachers are. They know, and a card is not the place. Just say what they did for your child.

Do not sign off with a long list of compliments. Pick the real one and let it stand on its own.

Do not write on behalf of the child unless they are too young to sign. If they can hold a pen, let them add their own message. It will mean more than yours.

One card from all the parents

Start it a week before the last day, send one link, and it opens for the teacher on the day.

  1. 01

Set the last day of term.

The card opens that morning. Pick the date when you set it up and it waits until then.

  2. 02

Send one link to each parent.

Everyone signs once, from their phone or a browser. No chasing, no collecting envelopes.

  3. 03

    The teacher reads every name.

Signed messages from every family in the class, in one card, on the last day.

Questions

What do you write in a thank you card for a teacher from a parent?

Name one thing the teacher did that changed something for your child. Two sentences, your name at the bottom. Specific is always better than warm.

When should parents send a thank you card to a teacher?

The last day of term is the obvious moment, but a card after a difficult patch or a parents' evening where the teacher said something useful lands just as well.

Can the whole class sign one card?

Yes, and it is better than one card per family. On tbf, a group card goes out as one link, everyone signs from home, and the teacher gets it all in one place.

Somebody has a day coming up.
