18th birthday wishes
for your daughter, from you.
You have watched her become herself for eighteen years. Name one true thing about who she is now, say you are proud, and sign it.
Lines are sorted by tone: from you alone, from you and her dad together, from the wider family, funny, and short.

The world gets you today. I am glad I had you first.
From both of us: thank you for being exactly who you are.
Your uncle sends his love. Your mum raised a good one.
The question
Each writer gets a question.
One at a time, about Sam. They answer in their own words, or write without one.
- Something Sam did this year that you still think about.
- Words of Sam's that you have caught yourself using.
- A day Sam made better just by turning up.
- Something Sam taught you without meaning to.
- A small thing about Sam that nobody else would notice.
- The story about Sam you tell most.
- The moment you knew you had a proper friend in Sam.
- Something Sam did that only a friend would.
- A thing you still laugh about together.
- The time Sam turned up when it mattered.
- Something Sam knew about you before you said it.
- Something Sam did for the family that went unsaid.
- A habit of Sam's that you have caught yourself copying.
- A memory of Sam from when you were younger.
- Something Sam put up with from you.
- Something Sam taught you, mostly by example.
- A small thing Sam did that you noticed and never mentioned.
- The moment you knew.
- Something Sam did this year that made things easier for you.
- A thing about Sam you would not change.
- Something Sam carried that was yours to carry.
- The thing you go to Sam for.
- Something you picked up from working beside Sam.
- A bad day at work that Sam turned round.
- Something a new starter should be told about Sam.
- Something Sam did that made the job feel worth doing.
Or write without one.

From mum
Eighteen years ago I held you for the first time and thought: she will be something. I was right.
You have become someone I like as well as love. That is no small thing.
Watching you grow up has been the best thing I have ever done. Happy birthday, my girl.
I used to choose everything for you. Now you choose, and you choose well. I am so proud.
The world gets you today. I am glad I had you first.
From mum and dad
We had no idea what we were doing eighteen years ago. Turns out, we were doing this.
Two people who love you most in the world say happy birthday. Go be extraordinary.
From both of us: thank you for being exactly who you are.
Happy birthday from your mum and dad. We are proud of you in ways we cannot fully say.
From the rest of the family
Happy birthday from your auntie. Your mum has talked about nothing else for weeks.
Eighteen already. We all blinked. Happy birthday from your cousins.
Your gran says she knew you were special the day you arrived. She was not wrong.
Your uncle sends his love. Your mum raised a good one.
So much of what you are is what this family hoped you would be. Happy birthday.
Funny, from mum
I survived the teenage years. You owe me this birthday.
Eighteen means I can stop worrying. I will not stop worrying.
You are legally an adult now, which means the mess in your room is officially your problem.
Happy birthday. The curfew is lifted. The worry is not.
Short
Eighteen. You made it. So did I.
So proud of who you are.
Happy birthday, my brilliant girl.
Everything good, always.
What not to write
Do not list every achievement from the past eighteen years. It reads like a school report. One true thing beats six proud ones.
Do not make it about your feelings that time has passed. She is turning eighteen, not leaving you. Keep the focus on her, not on how fast it went.
Do not load the card with advice about what comes next. She has heard it. Say you believe in her and stop there.
Do not write what you think an 18th card is supposed to say. She will know the difference between a line you chose and one you copied.
One card from the whole family
Her eighteenth comes once. Set the date, send the link to family, and she wakes up to every name on it.
- 01
Set her birthday as the open date.
The card opens that morning and not before. Nobody reads it early.
- 02
Share the link with family.
Each person writes their own line and signs it. One message from everyone, not one forwarded email.
- 03
She reads it on her birthday.
Every name, every line, all in one place. She keeps it.
Questions
What should a mum write in her daughter's 18th birthday card?
Name one quality you have watched her grow into, say you are proud, and wish her well. Two or three sentences from you will mean more than a page of borrowed words.
How long should the message be?
Short enough to read in one go. A card is not a letter. If you have more to say, say it separately, in person or in a note you give with it.
Can the whole family sign one card?
Yes. On tbf, one card goes round on a link and everyone adds their own line. It opens on her birthday, signed by all of them.
