21st birthday wishes.
What to write.

Twenty-one is the one birthday people actually remember, so write something worth keeping. Name a moment, say you are proud, and wish them well.

The wishes are sorted by who is signing: best friend, family, the group, and short ones when you are stuck for words.

Pick a design

  • A birthday present. Happy birthday. Open it before the tea cools.
  • Lino-cut lettering in a printed band. Happy birthday. Tea's on me.
  • Blowing out the candles. Small hands on a big cake. Happy birthday.
  • Half a biscuit over a mug of tea, the other half gone in, and the words one, two, three, four. Happy birthday. Try not to go soft.
  • A party hat. Happy birthday. The hat is not optional.
  • Midcentury birthday card. Happy birthday.
  • A set of car keys. Happy birthday. Still got it. Not sure where you put it.
  • A family holding hands. Hand in hand, same as always. Happy birthday.
  • A homemade cake with one candle. Happy birthday.
  • A mug. Happy birthday to the one who knows how everyone takes their tea.

The question

Each writer gets a question.

One at a time, about Sam. They answer in their own words, or write without one.

Who they are to you
  1. Something Sam did this year that you still think about.
  2. Words of Sam's that you have caught yourself using.
  3. A day Sam made better just by turning up.
  4. Something Sam taught you without meaning to.
  5. A small thing about Sam that nobody else would notice.
  6. The story about Sam you tell most.
  1. The moment you knew you had a proper friend in Sam.
  2. Something Sam did that only a friend would.
  3. A thing you still laugh about together.
  4. The time Sam turned up when it mattered.
  5. Something Sam knew about you before you said it.
  1. Something Sam did for the family that went unsaid.
  2. A habit of Sam's that you have caught yourself copying.
  3. A memory of Sam from when you were younger.
  4. Something Sam put up with from you.
  5. Something Sam taught you, mostly by example.
  1. A small thing Sam did that you noticed and never mentioned.
  2. The moment you knew.
  3. Something Sam did this year that made things easier for you.
  4. A thing about Sam you would not change.
  5. Something Sam carried that was yours to carry.
  1. The thing you go to Sam for.
  2. Something you picked up from working beside Sam.
  3. A bad day at work that Sam turned round.
  4. Something a new starter should be told about Sam.
  5. Something Sam did that made the job feel worth doing.

Or write without one.

21st birthday messages

Pick one, swap in a real detail, and sign it.

From a best friend

  • Twenty-one. I have known you for most of it and I am glad about all of it.

  • You have been exactly who you are since the day I met you. Happy birthday.

  • The last few years have been chaos and I would not change a thing. Happy 21st.

  • Happy birthday. You are finally old enough that I can stop covering for you.

  • I could list everything we have been through since school. This card is not big enough.

From parents

  • Twenty-one years and we are still proud of you every single day. Happy birthday.

  • Happy 21st. Watching you become who you are has been the best thing we have done.

  • You were small and then suddenly you were not. Happy birthday, and thank you for everything since.

  • We are not going to embarrass you with a speech. Just know we love you enormously. Happy 21st.

  • The kid who used to lose their shoes has somehow got it all together. We are delighted.

From the group

  • Happy 21st from all of us. Tonight is yours.

  • Twenty-one and we are all here for it. Happy birthday.

  • We have a table booked, a plan, and absolutely no guarantees. Happy 21st.

  • From everyone who has had the pleasure. Happy birthday.

  • We drew straws for who had to write this. The card still stands. Happy 21st.

Short

  • Happy 21st. Make it a good one.

  • Twenty-one. About time.

  • Happy birthday. You earned this one.

  • Here's to you. Happy 21st.

  • Happy 21st. The rest of it starts now.

What to leave out

Do not write about what they can legally do now. They know. The joke was tired before they were born.

Do not mention getting older or life moving fast. Twenty-one feels big already. You do not need to make it heavier.

Avoid anything that reads like advice for the decade ahead. They did not ask for a roadmap. Wish them a good birthday and stop there.

Do not write a card that is really about you, your memories, your feelings about time. Keep the card pointed at them.

One card from everyone

Friends, family, people from every part of their life. One link, and it opens on the day.

  1. 01

    Set the date.

Their 21st, so the card opens that morning and not before.

  2. 02

    Send the link.

Everyone gets one link. They write once, from any browser, no account needed.

  3. 03

They open it on the day.

Every message signed with a name. Better than a card passed round a room.

Questions

What do you write in a 21st birthday card?

Name something real about them, say you are glad for them, and wish them a good day. One specific detail is worth ten generic wishes.

How long should a 21st birthday message be?

Two or three sentences is plenty. The cards people keep are the ones that said something specific, not the ones that went on longest.

Can you use tbf for a 21st birthday group card?

Yes. Set the date, send one link to everyone signing, and the card opens for them on their birthday.

Somebody has a day coming up.
