80th birthday wishes.
What to write.

Name something they have given you, then wish them a brilliant day. At 80, they have heard the generic version plenty of times.

The 80th birthday wishes are sorted by who is signing: family, a close friend, or someone who has known them a long time but from further away.

The question

Each writer gets a question.

One at a time, about Sam. They answer in their own words, or write without one.

Who they are to you
  1. Something Sam did this year that you still think about.
  2. Words of Sam's that you have caught yourself using.
  3. A day Sam made better just by turning up.
  4. Something Sam taught you without meaning to.
  5. A small thing about Sam that nobody else would notice.
  6. The story about Sam you tell most.
  1. The moment you knew you had a proper friend in Sam.
  2. Something Sam did that only a friend would.
  3. A thing you still laugh about together.
  4. The time Sam turned up when it mattered.
  5. Something Sam knew about you before you said it.
  1. Something Sam did for the family that went unsaid.
  2. A habit of Sam's that you have caught yourself copying.
  3. A memory of Sam from when you were younger.
  4. Something Sam put up with from you.
  5. Something Sam taught you, mostly by example.
  1. A small thing Sam did that you noticed and never mentioned.
  2. The moment you knew.
  3. Something Sam did this year that made things easier for you.
  4. A thing about Sam you would not change.
  5. Something Sam carried that was yours to carry.
  1. The thing you go to Sam for.
  2. Something you picked up from working beside Sam.
  3. A bad day at work that Sam turned round.
  4. Something a new starter should be told about Sam.
  5. Something Sam did that made the job feel worth doing.

Or write without one.

80th birthday messages

Pick the one that sounds like you, change one detail to make it true, and sign it.

What to leave out

Do not make the number a punchline. One joke about age lands; three in a row read as unkind. At 80, they have heard them all.

Do not write about slowing down, taking it easy, or putting their feet up. They will decide what pace suits them.

Do not make it about the past only. Eighty is not a closing ceremony. Write something that belongs to today and what is ahead.

Do not reach for longevity quotes or sayings about wisdom. Write something about this person, not something that fits everyone who has reached 80.

One card from everyone

Family, old friends, neighbours. One link, and it opens on the morning.

  1. 01

Set the birthday as the open date.

The card stays sealed until the morning they turn 80. They open it with their coffee.

  2. 02

Send one link to everyone signing.

Each person adds their own message in a browser. No app, no account.

  3. 03

They read it on their phone or laptop.

Each message signed with a name. Better than a card passed round and posted.

Questions

What do you write in an 80th birthday card?

Name one thing they have given you or taught you, then wish them a happy day. Specific is what they will remember.

Is it okay to be funny in an 80th birthday card?

Yes, if that is who you both are. One light joke works. Keep something warm in there too, so it lands the right way.

How many people should sign an 80th birthday card?

As many as matter to them. A group card online means distance is not a reason to miss it, so the list can be long.

Somebody has a day coming up.
