Christian birthday wishes for
your sister in law.

Name her, thank God for her, and say one true thing about who she is. That is the whole card.

The wishes are sorted by who is signing: her brother or sister's spouse, the wider family, and short blessings for anyone who wants to keep it simple.

Pick a design

  • Marker lettering. Happy birthday. First round's on you. "us" is crossed out and "you" written above it.
  • Out with friends. Walk with us. The cake can wait.
  • Tasting the wine. We tasted six. We remember four. Happy birthday.
  • Marker lettering with a highlighter stroke. Happy birthday. You still can't fold a fitted sheet and that's fine.
  • A party outside. Hats on. The cake has waited long enough.
  • Balloons. For the walk home. Something bright to carry.
  • A sun. Happy birthday. Hope the sun comes out.
  • A birthday present. Happy birthday. Open it before the tea cools.
  • A mug. Happy birthday to the one who knows how everyone takes their tea.
  • A pair of socks. Happy birthday. It's socks. You knew it was socks.

  3. A day Sam made better just by turning up.
  4. Something Sam taught you without meaning to.
  5. A small thing about Sam that nobody else would notice.
  6. The story about Sam you tell most.

  2. Something Sam did that only a friend would.
  3. A thing you still laugh about together.
  4. The time Sam turned up when it mattered.

  3. A memory of Sam from when you were younger.
  4. Something Sam put up with from you.
  5. Something Sam taught you, mostly by example.
  1. A small thing Sam did that you noticed and never mentioned.

What not to write

Do not quote a Bible verse unless it is one she uses herself. A verse chosen at random can land flat or feel like a lesson rather than a wish.

Do not write about her faith as if it is a performance. Say she is kind or faithful if you mean it, but do not make the card sound like a character reference.

Do not mention family tensions or anything unsaid between you. A birthday card is not the place, and faith language does not soften those things.

Do not make it long. Two sentences with her name in them will mean more than a paragraph of blessings.

One card from everyone

She married into the family, and the whole family can sign. Set her birthday, share one link, and every name lands in one place.

  1. 01

    Add her birthday.

The card opens that morning. Everyone signs before the day, and she reads it when she wakes up.

  2. 02

    Choose who to ask.

Her partner, the siblings, the wider family. Each person gets one link and writes their own message.

  3. 03

    She reads every name.

Signed, in their own words. She keeps it on her phone.

Questions

What Bible verse works well in a birthday card?

Use a verse she would recognise from her own faith, not one chosen because it sounds right. Specific and personal beats general and impressive.

How personal should a Christian birthday wish be for a sister in law?

Think about how she came into the family. A wish that names that, even briefly, lands differently from one that could go to anyone. Two honest sentences beat five warm ones.

Can the whole family sign one card?

Yes. On tbf, one card goes round with a link. Each person writes their own message, and it opens for her on the day.

Somebody has a day coming up.
