What to leave out

Do not ask about the date, the venue or the budget in the card. They will be asked all three by everyone else that week.

Do not mention the ex, the length of the relationship, or that you expected it sooner. It is a card, not a review.

If one of them is new to you, write to both by name anyway. A card addressed to one half of a couple is noticed by the other half.

One card from everyone

Both families, both sets of friends. One link, and it opens on the day you choose.

  1. 01

    Add the date.

The engagement party, or a day soon after the news. The card opens that morning.

  2. 02

    Choose who to ask.

Everyone who wants to say congratulations. Each gets one link and writes once, in a browser.

  3. 03

    Everyone writes their own words.

Signed with their name. The couple read it together and keep it.

Questions

What do you write in an engagement card?

Both names, one thing you like about them as a couple, and congratulations. Keep it to three sentences and make the middle one specific.

Do you write to both people or one?

Both, by name, even if you only know one of them. A card to one half of a couple is read by the other half too.

Should the card mention the wedding?

Only to say you are looking forward to it. Questions about the date, the venue and the list belong in a conversation, not in the card.

What if I do not think it is a good idea?

Then write a short, plain congratulations and nothing else. A card is not the place, and a warm short message costs you nothing.

Somebody has a day coming up.
