The question

Each writer gets a question.

One at a time, about Sam. They answer in their own words, or write without one.

Who they are to you
  1. The moment you knew this was the real thing.
  2. Something you noticed change in Sam for the better.
  3. A small thing you have seen them do for each other.
  4. The story about Sam you would tell at the table.
  5. Something you learned about being with somebody from watching Sam.
  6. Something you hope never changes about Sam.
  1. The moment you knew you had a proper friend in Sam.
  2. Something Sam did that only a friend would.
  3. A thing you still laugh about together.
  4. The time Sam turned up when it mattered.
  5. Something Sam knew about you before you said it.
  1. Something Sam did for the family that went unsaid.
  2. A habit of Sam's that you have caught yourself copying.
  3. A memory of Sam from when you were younger.
  4. Something Sam put up with from you.
  5. Something Sam taught you, mostly by example.
  1. A small thing Sam did that you noticed and never mentioned.
  2. The moment you knew.
  3. Something Sam did this year that made things easier for you.
  4. A thing about Sam you would not change.
  5. Something Sam carried that was yours to carry.
  1. The thing you go to Sam for.
  2. Something you picked up from working beside Sam.
  3. A bad day at work that Sam turned round.
  4. Something a new starter should be told about Sam.
  5. Something Sam did that made the job feel worth doing.

Or write without one.

What to leave out

Avoid phrases like forever and always, soulmates, and two hearts becoming one. They mean nothing specific and they sound like the envelope came printed that way.

Do not write a paragraph of advice about marriage. They did not ask. A little congratulations lands better than a lot of wisdom.

Do not write only about the wedding day. The day is over by the time they read most cards. Wish them for what comes after.

A forced rhyme about love and above, or rings and beginnings, is the cheesiest thing you can put in a wedding card. If it does not come naturally, write a plain sentence instead.

One card from everyone

Everyone at the wedding, and everyone who could not make it. One link covers both, and it opens on the morning they wake up married.

  1. 01

    Add the wedding date.

The card opens that morning and not before.

  2. 02

    Share one link.

On the tables or in the group chat. Each person writes once, in a browser.

  3. 03

    They read it together.

Every message signed with a name. They keep it.

Questions

What makes a wedding card message not cheesy?

A specific detail beats a general wish every time. Name something true about them as a couple and the cheesiness disappears.

How short can a wedding card message be?

A couple of sentences is enough. Congratulations, one honest thing, done. Nobody marks you down for being concise.

What do you write in a wedding card for colleagues?

Keep it warm and brief. Congratulations, both names, one good wish. A work card does not need to go as deep as a friend's.

Somebody has a day coming up.
