Funny birthday wishes for mom
from daughter.

Pick something real she does, exaggerate it slightly, and sign with love. That is the whole formula.

The lines are sorted by tone: gentle teasing, the things she always says, gratitude with a punchline, and short ones for when you just need something good.

Two-colour printed lettering. Happy birthday. Yes, there's cake. No, you don't have to speak.

I turned out this way because of you, so this is partly your fault. Happy birthday.

From Dev

You said this would happen and it did. You say that a lot. Happy birthday, Mum.

From Ellen

You made me who I am and then spent years wondering what happened. Happy birthday.

From Ben

Pick a design

  • Marker lettering with a highlighter stroke. Happy birthday. You still can't fold a fitted sheet and that's fine.
  • Half a biscuit over a mug of tea, the other half gone in, and the words one, two, three, four. Happy birthday. Try not to go soft.
  • At the barbecue. Extra for the birthday cook. Burnt bits included.
  • A sun. Happy birthday. Hope the sun comes out.
  • A party with balloons. Hold a balloon. Hold a friend. Happy birthday.
  • A party hat. Happy birthday. The hat is not optional.
  • A roast potato. Happy birthday. Have the last roast potato.
  • A cupcake and the words one, two, twenty, forty. Happy birthday. We counted the candles. We ran out.
  • A set of car keys. Happy birthday. Still got it. Not sure where you put it.
  • A birthday cake. Make a wish. The smoke alarm is part of the show.

The question

Each writer gets a question.

One at a time, about Sam. They answer in their own words, or write without one.

Who they are to you
  1. Something Sam did this year that you still think about.
  2. Words of Sam's that you have caught yourself using.
  3. A day Sam made better just by turning up.
  4. Something Sam taught you without meaning to.
  5. A small thing about Sam that nobody else would notice.
  6. The story about Sam you tell most.
  1. The moment you knew you had a proper friend in Sam.
  2. Something Sam did that only a friend would.
  3. A thing you still laugh about together.
  4. The time Sam turned up when it mattered.
  5. Something Sam knew about you before you said it.
  1. Something Sam did for the family that went unsaid.
  2. A habit of Sam's that you have caught yourself copying.
  3. A memory of Sam from when you were younger.
  4. Something Sam put up with from you.
  5. Something Sam taught you, mostly by example.
  1. A small thing Sam did that you noticed and never mentioned.
  2. The moment you knew.
  3. Something Sam did this year that made things easier for you.
  4. A thing about Sam you would not change.
  5. Something Sam carried that was yours to carry.
  1. The thing you go to Sam for.
  2. Something you picked up from working beside Sam.
  3. A bad day at work that Sam turned round.
  4. Something a new starter should be told about Sam.
  5. Something Sam did that made the job feel worth doing.

Or write without one.

Birthday lines for mum, from a daughter

Pick your tone, put her actual habit in it, and sign your name.

Gentle teasing

  • Happy birthday, Mum. You were right about him, the job, and the coat. I am not saying it again.

  • You have given me your eyes, your laugh and your inability to leave a room without checking the stove twice. Happy birthday.

  • Happy birthday to the woman who can find anything in this house except her own phone.

  • I turned out this way because of you, so this is partly your fault. Happy birthday.

  • You said I would understand when I was older. I am older. You were annoyingly right.

The things she always says

  • Happy birthday to the woman who invented 'because I said so' and never apologised for it.

  • You told me to eat before I left the house every single day. I do it now. Happy birthday, and thank you.

  • Happy birthday. You still ask if I have a coat on. I am in another city, and I love you for it.

  • You said this would happen and it did. You say that a lot. Happy birthday, Mum.

Gratitude with a punchline

  • Thank you for everything you did for me that I only understand now. Also for the lifts. Happy birthday.

  • You raised me, drove me everywhere and pretended not to notice several things. Happy birthday.

  • Happy birthday, Mum. You are the reason I am half-decent at this life. The other half I am working on.

  • You made me who I am and then spent years wondering what happened. Happy birthday.

  • Thank you for picking up every time I ring. Even the third time the same day. Happy birthday.

Short

  • Happy birthday, Mum. Still my favourite.

  • You are funnier than you think. Happy birthday.

  • Happy birthday. I got your stubborn streak. Sorry.

  • Still the best. Happy birthday, Mum.

What not to write

Do not joke about her age as if it is a problem. She has earned every year and she knows it. Write the joke about her habits, not her number.

Do not recycle a line she has seen on a card before. She will recognise it. Write the thing only you know, the phrase she always uses, the thing she was right about.

Do not go so funny that the love disappears. These lines work because affection is underneath them. A punchline with no warmth is just a dig.

Do not make it about you. This is her birthday. The joke can involve you, but she should be the one who comes out of it well.

One card from all of her daughters

If there are more of you, one card is better than four separate ones.

  1. 01

Set her birthday as the open date.

The card opens that morning. She reads it when she wakes up.

  2. 02

Send the link to everyone signing.

Sisters, daughters-in-law, the friend who is basically family. Each person writes their own line.

  3. 03

She reads it on her phone.

Every name, every line. She keeps it.

Questions

How do you write a funny birthday message for your mum without it seeming mean?

Make the joke about something she does, not something she is. Teasing her for always being right is affectionate. Teasing her for anything she did not choose is not.

What if you and your mum have a dry sense of humour?

Go dryer. A single deadpan line lands harder than a paragraph of jokes. Less is funnier when you both know the reference.

Can a group of daughters send one card?

Yes. On tbf, one card goes round with a single link. Each person writes their own line and it arrives as one card on her birthday.

Somebody has a day coming up.
