  6. Something nobody told you about babies that you wish they had.
  7. Your guess at the day, and why.

  2. A habit of Sam's that you have caught yourself copying.
  3. A memory of Sam from when you were younger.
  4. Something Sam put up with from you.
  5. Something Sam taught you, mostly by example.
  1. A small thing Sam did that you noticed and never mentioned.

What to leave out

Do not give parenting advice. They have a midwife, a mother-in-law and the internet. They need lasagne.

Do not comment on the birth, the size or the name. Say the baby is lovely and move on.

Do not write that the hard part starts now. They know. Say they will be good at it.

One card from everyone

Friends, family, the antenatal group. One link, and it opens when the baby arrives.

  1. 01

    Add the due date.

The card opens that morning and not before.

  2. 02

    Ask everyone.

Each person gets one link and writes once, in a browser.

  3. 03

    They read it at 3am.

Every message for the baby, signed with a name.

Questions

What do you write in a new baby card?

Both parents' names, congratulations, the baby's name, and one practical offer. Food, babysitting and sleep are the only offers that count.

What do you write if you have not met the baby?

Say you cannot wait to meet them. Nobody expects a description of a baby you have not seen.

Should you give advice in a new baby card?

No. They are drowning in advice. Say they will be good at it and stop.

What do grandparents write?

That they are delighted, and when they will visit. New grandparents who offer babysitting are remembered fondly.

Somebody has a day coming up.
