- Sister poem for birthday
Sister poem
for birthday.
A birthday poem for a sister names one thing she did and makes it rhyme. Keep it to four lines, the rhythm of a song you both know.
The verses are sorted by who is writing: a close sister, a younger sister, a funny one for the family group card.

The question
Each writer gets a question.
One at a time, about Sam. They answer in their own words, or write without one.
- Something Sam did this year that you still think about.
- Words of Sam's that you have caught yourself using.
- A day Sam made better just by turning up.
- Something Sam taught you without meaning to.
- A small thing about Sam that nobody else would notice.
- The story about Sam you tell most.
- The moment you knew you had a proper friend in Sam.
- Something Sam did that only a friend would.
- A thing you still laugh about together.
- The time Sam turned up when it mattered.
- Something Sam knew about you before you said it.
- Something Sam did for the family that went unsaid.
- A habit of Sam's that you have caught yourself copying.
- A memory of Sam from when you were younger.
- Something Sam put up with from you.
- Something Sam taught you, mostly by example.
- A small thing Sam did that you noticed and never mentioned.
- The moment you knew.
- Something Sam did this year that made things easier for you.
- A thing about Sam you would not change.
- Something Sam carried that was yours to carry.
- The thing you go to Sam for.
- Something you picked up from working beside Sam.
- A bad day at work that Sam turned round.
- Something a new starter should be told about Sam.
- Something Sam did that made the job feel worth doing.
Or write without one.
Sister birthday poems
Pick a group, copy the verse, and sign your name.
From a close sister
Another year, another win,
I watched you take it on the chin.
You are the one I always call,
Happy birthday, best of all.Remember when we shared that room,
The quiet and the sudden boom.
We have our own homes now, it's true,
But I am still here, cheering you.The year was long, the days were tough,
You handled it with just enough.
Of all the things that I hold dear,
My sister being here, right here. You taught me how to ride a bike,
And when to say I did not like.
The lessons stuck, the love grew tall,
Happy birthday, after all.
From a younger sister
You went first and showed the way,
Through every difficult today.
I followed where your footsteps led,
Happy birthday, go ahead. You got the rules, I got the bed,
And all the things our parents said.
You are the map I still consult,
No matter what the old result.I copied every word you said,
And wore the clothes you left for dead.
Now I have my own, it's true,
But I still learn from you.You had the patience, I had none,
Until the difficult was done.
You are the calm I call upon,
Happy birthday, and then on.
Funny, for the family card
A birthday means the cake is back,
And you are cutting me a slab.
I call the corner with the rose,
The one that everybody knows.Another year of being right,
In every argument or fight.
We let you have it, just today,
Because the cake is on its way.You are the reason Mum still calls,
To check on both of us, that's all.
The shared responsibility,
Happy birthday, thanks for me.The presents are a guessing game,
We all know yours will be the same.
A book, a plant, a scented thing,
And then we all sit down to sing.
What to leave out
Do not make the rhyme about her age. A poem that ends with 'thirty-four and still a bore' is a joke she did not ask for.
Do not use a famous poem she will recognise. Write four new lines about her, not a borrowed verse about sisters in general.
Do not force a rhyme that does not fit. If the best word for the memory does not rhyme, use a different memory.
One card of poems
The family writes a verse each. One link, and it opens on her birthday.
- 01
Add her birthday.
The card opens that morning, full of the verses.
- 02
Ask the family.
Each person gets one link and writes their own poem.
- 03
She reads a book of them.
Every verse is signed. She keeps it.
Questions
How do you write a birthday poem for a sister?
Pick one memory from the year, find three words that rhyme with it, and make the last line the wish. Four lines is a poem, not a card message.
What should a sister birthday poem avoid?
Do not rhyme her name with a joke about her age or weight. Do not use a poem you found online, because she might have seen it too.
Can a short verse go in a group birthday card?
Yes. On tbf, each person writes their own words. A four-line poem fits under a name, and the whole card is a book of them.
