Happy birthday. The room is always better when you are in it, horn or not.
Happy birthday. You tune first and that is why the rest of us can.
You found the thing you love and you got good at it. Happy birthday.
The question
Each writer gets a question.
One at a time, about Sam. They answer in their own words, or write without one.
- Something Sam did this year that you still think about.
- Words of Sam's that you have caught yourself using.
- A day Sam made better just by turning up.
- Something Sam taught you without meaning to.
- A small thing about Sam that nobody else would notice.
- The story about Sam you tell most.
- The moment you knew you had a proper friend in Sam.
- Something Sam did that only a friend would.
- A thing you still laugh about together.
- The time Sam turned up when it mattered.
- Something Sam knew about you before you said it.
- Something Sam did for the family that went unsaid.
- A habit of Sam's that you have caught yourself copying.
- A memory of Sam from when you were younger.
- Something Sam put up with from you.
- Something Sam taught you, mostly by example.
- A small thing Sam did that you noticed and never mentioned.
- The moment you knew.
- Something Sam did this year that made things easier for you.
- A thing about Sam you would not change.
- Something Sam carried that was yours to carry.
- The thing you go to Sam for.
- Something you picked up from working beside Sam.
- A bad day at work that Sam turned round.
- Something a new starter should be told about Sam.
- Something Sam did that made the job feel worth doing.
Or write without one.

From a close friend
Happy birthday. You make an instrument most people cannot name sound beautiful.
You have carried that thing on public transport for years without complaint. Happy birthday.
Happy birthday. I have heard you play a hundred times and it still catches me off guard.
Nobody else I know can hold a note that long without going red. Happy birthday.
Happy birthday. The room is always better when you are in it, horn or not.
From a fellow musician
Happy birthday. The section would fall apart without you and we all know it.
You covered that entry in the third movement when the rest of us missed it. Happy birthday.
Happy birthday. Nobody blends like you do. It is irritating in the best way.
Playing alongside you has made me better. Happy birthday, and thank you for that.
Happy birthday. You tune first and that is why the rest of us can.
From family
Happy birthday. We sat through every rehearsal and every concert and we would do it all again.
You found the thing you love and you got good at it. Happy birthday.
Happy birthday. The neighbours have come round and they are fans now.
We did not always understand what you were practising, but we always knew when it was right. Happy birthday.
Short
Happy birthday to the best French horn player I know.
Happy birthday. Play something tonight.
You and that horn. Happy birthday.
Happy birthday. The music is worth every early morning.
What to leave out
Do not make the whole card about the instrument. They are a person first. One reference to the French horn is enough.
Do not compare them to someone famous unless you know they like the comparison. A name dropped carelessly lands wrong.
Avoid jokes about the instrument being hard to learn or hard to hear. They have heard those jokes more than you have.
Do not write anything about giving it up or growing out of it. That is not a birthday thought.
One card from everyone
Set the birthday, send one link, and it opens for them on the day.
- 01
Set the date.
Their birthday. The card opens that morning and not before.
- 02
Send the link.
Friends, family, bandmates. Each person writes once, in a browser, no app needed.
- 03
They read it on the day.
Every message signed with a name. Better than a group chat, and kept longer.
Questions
What do you write in a birthday card for a musician?
Name one specific thing you have heard them do, or one thing the music has given you both. Something about their playing beats something about music in general.
Is it okay to mention the French horn specifically?
Yes, once. A card that only talks about the instrument misses the person. Mention the horn once, then write about them.
Can you send a group birthday card online?
Yes. On tbf, one card goes round by link, everyone signs it, and it opens on the birthday. No printing or chasing needed.
Somebody has a day coming up.
