Merry Christmas. You are the reason we all come home.
Happy Christmas. You are annoying and I would not change a thing.
Happy Christmas. Your house is still the best place to be on the day.
The question
Each writer gets a question.
One at a time, about Sam. They answer in their own words, or write without one.
- Something you saw Sam do to get here.
- The moment you knew Sam would manage it.
- Something Sam put up with on the way.
- A thing about Sam that made this no surprise.
- The part of this that was all Sam's own doing.
- Something you hope Sam will stop and enjoy.
- The moment you knew you had a proper friend in Sam.
- Something Sam did that only a friend would.
- A thing you still laugh about together.
- The time Sam turned up when it mattered.
- Something Sam knew about you before you said it.
- Something Sam did for the family that went unsaid.
- A habit of Sam's that you have caught yourself copying.
- A memory of Sam from when you were younger.
- Something Sam put up with from you.
- Something Sam taught you, mostly by example.
- A small thing Sam did that you noticed and never mentioned.
- The moment you knew.
- Something Sam did this year that made things easier for you.
- A thing about Sam you would not change.
- Something Sam carried that was yours to carry.
- The thing you go to Sam for.
- Something you picked up from working beside Sam.
- A bad day at work that Sam turned round.
- Something a new starter should be told about Sam.
- Something Sam did that made the job feel worth doing.
Or write without one.

Merry Christmas. You are the reason we all come home.
Happy Christmas, Mum and Dad. We never say it enough, so: thank you.
Wishing you a quiet Christmas and a warm one. You deserve both.
Merry Christmas. We love you more than the card section could ever fit.
For siblings
Happy Christmas. You are annoying and I would not change a thing.
Merry Christmas to my favourite sibling. The bar is low and you clear it every year.
Happy Christmas. Another year of putting up with each other. Long may it continue.
Merry Christmas. Same time, same sofa, same argument about the remote. Perfect.
For grandparents
Happy Christmas. Your house is still the best place to be on the day.
Merry Christmas. We think about you more than we say, and today especially.
Happy Christmas to our wonderful grandparents. We are lucky to have you.
Wishing you a peaceful, happy Christmas. We will call in the morning.
For the whole family
Happy Christmas, all of you. This lot is my favourite lot.
Merry Christmas, family. Another year of group chats and actually meaning it.
Happy Christmas. Grateful for every one of you, even in the loud moments.
Wishing you the kind of Christmas Day that goes on just long enough.
Merry Christmas. Same place, same people, still the best day of the year.
Short
Happy Christmas. Love you all.
Merry Christmas, with all our love.
Happy Christmas. See you soon.
Merry Christmas. So glad you're ours.
Wishing you a lovely Christmas.
What to leave out
Do not recap the whole year. What you hope for them, or what their year meant to you, is worth more than a paragraph of updates. Keep it short.
Do not send the same message to everyone in the family. They talk.
Do not leave a printed verse to do all the work. Sign it and add a few words of your own. Then it is a card from you, not from the shop.
Do not mention money, old grievances or health worries. Not on Christmas morning.
One card from the whole family
Parents, siblings, cousins, the ones who are far away. One link, and it opens on Christmas morning.
- 01
Set it to open on Christmas Day.
The card stays sealed until the morning, then opens all at once.
- 02
Share the link with everyone signing.
Each person writes once, from any browser, no account needed.
- 03
They read every message in one place.
Each message carries a name. They keep it long after the wrapping paper is gone.
Questions
What do you write in a Christmas card to family?
Use their name, say one true thing about their year or yours, and wish them well. A sentence that sounds like you beats any verse.
What do you write to family you don't see often?
Say you think of them, wish them a good Christmas, and mention that you'd like to see them in the new year if you can. Short and warm is enough.
Can you send one group Christmas card to the whole family?
On tbf you can. One card, one link, everyone signs it, and it opens on Christmas morning.
