  • A plate of biscuits. Happy birthday. The good biscuits are out.
  • A cupcake with its candles blown out. Blow them out quickly. The smoke alarm is very sensitive.
  • A birthday cake. We counted the candles. Then we stopped counting.
  • A birthday cake. Make a wish. The smoke alarm is part of the show.
  • A wrapped present. Many happy returns. Keep the receipt.
  • A cake. Another year of saying you'll get an early night.
  • Blowing out the candles. Top of the pile for one day. Mind the wrapping.
  • Blowing out the candles. She climbed the presents. The cake never stood a chance.
  • Celebrating together. We practised the cheer. It still sounds awful.

The question

Each writer gets a question.

One at a time, about Sam. They answer in their own words, or write without one.

Who they are to you
  1. Something Sam did this year that you still think about.
  2. Words of Sam's that you have caught yourself using.
  3. A day Sam made better just by turning up.
  4. Something Sam taught you without meaning to.
  5. A small thing about Sam that nobody else would notice.
  6. The story about Sam you tell most.
  1. The moment you knew you had a proper friend in Sam.
  2. Something Sam did that only a friend would.
  3. A thing you still laugh about together.
  4. The time Sam turned up when it mattered.
  5. Something Sam knew about you before you said it.
  1. Something Sam did for the family that went unsaid.
  2. A habit of Sam's that you have caught yourself copying.
  3. A memory of Sam from when you were younger.
  4. Something Sam put up with from you.
  5. Something Sam taught you, mostly by example.
  1. A small thing Sam did that you noticed and never mentioned.
  2. The moment you knew.
  3. Something Sam did this year that made things easier for you.
  4. A thing about Sam you would not change.
  5. Something Sam carried that was yours to carry.
  1. The thing you go to Sam for.
  2. Something you picked up from working beside Sam.
  3. A bad day at work that Sam turned round.
  4. Something a new starter should be told about Sam.
  5. Something Sam did that made the job feel worth doing.

Or write without one.

What to write under the joke

The front does the joke. Inside, say something you mean.

For a friend

  • The card is funny. You are funnier. Happy birthday.

  • I picked the rudest one they had and then lost my nerve. Happy birthday anyway.

  • Another year of you being right about films and wrong about pizza.

  • You have been the funniest person in my phone for ten years. Happy birthday.

From a group

  • We voted on the card. It was close. Happy birthday from all of us.

  • Signed by everyone who has ever borrowed your charger.

  • Happy birthday from the group chat, which is quieter without your voice notes.

  • Everyone here has a story about you. We have been told to keep them inside the card.

From family

  • Happy birthday. The card was Dad's choice, so blame him.

  • We could not find one that said how old you are without being rude. This came close.

  • Happy birthday from the people who knew you before you were funny.

Picking the joke

Pick the joke for the person, not for the room. A card about getting old lands differently at thirty than at sixty.

If the group is big, choose a gentle one. Twenty people signing a rude card means twenty people have to stand behind it.

The fronts come in five styles: riso, gouache, cut paper, marker and lino. The joke is printed on each one.

How it works

One card, one link, every name on it.

  1. 01

    Pick a front.

Any card above. You can change it until the first person signs.

  2. 02

    Send the link.

Each person adds their own note from a browser. Nobody needs the app.

  3. 03

    It opens on the birthday.

They read every note on their phone, and keep it.

Questions

Can a group sign a funny birthday card online?

Yes. Pick a front here, share the link, and everybody writes their own note. It opens on the birthday.

Which funny cards are for a whole group?

46 of the 68 are written for a group to sign. The rest suit a card from one person.

Can I change the design after sending the link?

Yes, until the first person signs. After that the front stays, so the notes match it.

Somebody has a day coming up.
