  • Celebrating. The cracker joke made Dad laugh. Dad. Think about that.
  • A snowman in a bauble. Roll the big ball. Do not drop it.
  • A party. You danced at the party. We all saw. Superb.
  • Carrying the tree home. One bauble broke. There will be a short service later.
  • A big present. All presents labelled. One says guess. Good luck.
  • A present with a surprise. Open the box first. Something moved.
  • Dinner together. One bird for nine people. No seconds.

  • Skating together. Ice holds. Do not test it.
  • A winter walk. You have the robin's chest. All red from the cold walk.
  • A party with balloons. Night is young. We are pacing badly.
  • Father Christmas visiting. Dad is Santa this year. The beard itches. Send sherry.
  • Counting stars. The star fell off. It is now a floor star.
  • Carrying the tree home. Happy Christmas. Nobody touches the tree till January.
  • Out with friends. Mince pie count: six. And it is only the twenty-third.

The question

Each writer gets a question.

One at a time, about Sam. They answer in their own words, or write without one.

Who they are to you
  1. A Christmas with Sam you still think about.
  2. Something Sam never missed at Christmas.
  3. The best present Sam ever gave you, and why it mattered.
  4. A Christmas dinner at Sam's you remember.
  5. Something you are glad Sam will be there for.
  6. What Christmas would miss without Sam.
  1. The moment you knew you had a proper friend in Sam.
  2. Something Sam did that only a friend would.
  3. A thing you still laugh about together.
  4. The time Sam turned up when it mattered.
  5. Something Sam knew about you before you said it.
  1. Something Sam did for the family that went unsaid.
  2. A habit of Sam's that you have caught yourself copying.
  3. A memory of Sam from when you were younger.
  4. Something Sam put up with from you.
  5. Something Sam taught you, mostly by example.
  1. A small thing Sam did that you noticed and never mentioned.
  2. The moment you knew.
  3. Something Sam did this year that made things easier for you.
  4. A thing about Sam you would not change.
  5. Something Sam carried that was yours to carry.
  1. The thing you go to Sam for.
  2. Something you picked up from working beside Sam.
  3. A bad day at work that Sam turned round.
  4. Something a new starter should be told about Sam.
  5. Something Sam did that made the job feel worth doing.

Or write without one.

What to write inside

Let the front be daft. Inside, be kind.

From the family

  • Happy Christmas from the people who will argue about the board game again.

  • We hid the sprouts. Merry Christmas.

  • Happy Christmas. The tree survived the cat. Mostly.

From the team

  • Merry Christmas from everyone who said they would sort the office party.

  • Happy Christmas. The out of office is on. So are the slippers.

  • From the whole team, with thanks for a year of putting up with us.

From friends

  • Happy Christmas. Same time next year, same terrible jumpers.

  • We got you a card because we could not agree on a present.

  • Merry Christmas from the friends who still have your Tupperware.

Choosing the joke for a crowd

A Christmas card is read by the whole house, so pick a joke the grandparents will get.

Group cards work best for somebody far away this year. Everybody signs, and they open it on the day wherever they are.

How it works

One card, one link, every name on it.

  1. 01

    Pick a front.

Any card above. You can change it until the first person signs.

  2. 02

    Send the link.

Each person adds their own note from a browser. Nobody needs the app.

  3. 03

    It opens on Christmas morning.

They read every note on their phone, and keep it.

Questions

Can a family sign one Christmas card online?

Yes. One person picks the card and shares a link, and everybody adds a note before Christmas.

When should I send the link?

By mid December, so everybody has a weekend to sign. It opens on the day you choose.

Are there Christmas cards for a team at work?

Yes. Several of these are drawn for a team, and every one can be signed by a group.

Somebody has a day coming up.
